Virtuous Brows & Beauty reflects what owner Tonya Hopkins values most – her faith and her ability to make others look and feel their best.

As a mother of two and a longtime South Bend resident, Tonya was looking to get out of corporate positions and spend time within her community doing something she was passionate about – brow embroidery! After months of classes, trainings, and preparation, Tonya opened the doors to her Mishawaka, IN studio location in June 2020.

Starting a small business in the middle of a pandemic is no small feat, but Tonya has already seen success and is excited about the growth to come.

At Virtuous Brows and Beauty, Tonya offers brow embroidery services like microblading and microshading in addition to other beauty services including under-eye concealer, eyebrow highlighting, and eyebrow arch & tinting techniques.

Because microblading is relatively new, Tonya faces the challenging of marketing her business while simultaneously educating prospective customers about the service. She explains, “Microblading involves creating realistic, hair-like strokes within the eyebrow area. It can create the illusion of thicker, fuller brows for anyone, but I like to especially focus on men and women who have dealt with hair loss from cancer treatments.”

Unlike a typical tattoo procedure that goes into the third layer of skin, microblading only goes beneath the first layer of skin – making it less painful, but only semi-permanent.

Tonya’s focus on customer experience is apparent the moment a client walks through her studio door. At the start of a traditional 2.5- to 3-hour appointment, Tonya spends 30 to 45 minutes with her client, talking through procedure details as well as his or her expectations. Before heading back to the procedure room, “I complete measurements and mapping to determine the best angle for your brows’ arches in order to suit your face shape”, Tonya says.

After first starting to pluck and wax her brows around the age of 13, Tonya has long been passionate about brows and saw microblading as a way to take her skills to the next level. Over the past year, Tonya has earned several certifications in order to perform Eyebrow Embroidery Services including Blood Borne Pathogen, CPR and AED Certifications, in addition to passing all Health Board regulations. Tonya is also compliant with COVID-19 precautions, and makes sure that every client is protected, safe and secure within her studio.

Additionally, she has attended special training sessions in Chicago, Atlanta, and Indianapolis to receive personalized instruction – but she still wants to keep educating herself so she can further perfect her skills.

Tonya’s small business journey also includes her participation in the inaugural South Bend Entrepreneurship and Adversity (SBEAP) bootcamp, which she discovered on a flyer while at a restaurant. She states, “Even though I had a lot of things for my business in place, I knew there was still more that I needed to learn. I attended class on 6 weekends, and it was phenomenal – it opened up a world of knowledge for me”.

She was recently graduated from the program and was selected as the winner of the “Dreamer and Doer Award” in recognition of her spirit and determination. She aims to use her new business knowledge to further grow and improve Virtuous Brows & Beauty, while continuing to develop the relationships she made with fellow SBEAP participants.
